Dancing Around the Fire

We live in a realm of personal cages — with each
breath we draw, another soul is imprisoned;
every time we exhale, another soul’s set loose.
Even though we are completely free to come and go
as we please, we seem to prefer a life behind bars.
We imagine we’re protected there from the unknown.
Our ancestors used to dance around the tribal bonfire.
They became so immersed in the dance trance that all
of their chains fell away and the one God appeared.
This God is still going in and out of cages, leaving mail
for every prisoner, heart letters from our ancestors to us.
They read: “Don’t fear the darkness, become instead a flame!”
